September: Saturday 24th Visit: Buckingham Palace
[Report] The Group's first visit to Buckingham Palace now that parts of it were open to the public. We were dropped off in Trafalgar Square and had a few hours to do as we wished before meeting up at 3.30pm to enter the side door. Having expected a formal, well-regimented tour, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were free to wander at our leisure around the marked route - the only control being limited numbers allowed into various rooms to save overcrowding. It was a long-awaited opportunity to see what it's like inside, and I'm sure we all bought what we hoped were good quality souvenirs (the carrier bags were certainly posher than normal) from the marquee on the back lawn on the way out to the coach which was waiting nearby. September Weekend visit: Harrogate, staying at Moat House
July: Saturday 22nd RHS Wisley Gardens
[Report] We visited RHS Wisley Gardens whilst the country was in the middle of a heatwave; consequently, even the well-tended gardens there were suffering from the high temperatures and near-constant sunshine. Nevertheless, it was the first visit for many and was still very interesting to see and take notes for ideas in our own gardens. Linda Maddock
June: Sunday 11th National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks
[Report] The National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks - an enjoyable, informative and well laid out history of the use of canals in England for both industry and leisure. Nearby was the fascinating Robert Opie Collection of household consumables from days gone by - everyone had fun spotting things like Dolly Blue sachets that were used for laundry and children's favourite sweets like Fry's mint chocolate bars, Spangles and so on. Just around the corner was an antique centre covering several floors of an old dock warehouse, where we could all do a bit of "Bargain Hunting" before the term became part of our everyday television lives.
